Let’s see what we can see!
I’m glad to write about a regular event that helps the English students at our university to come a little bit closer to each other. I’m talking about the English Film Club, which meets every Wednesday at 6 o’clock. The person who came up with this brilliant idea is no other than Farkas (a.k.a. Attila Szabó), one of the first-year students. It seems that a magnificent idea wasn’t enough, and people still tend not to come to the Club. Of course, I could name many of our fellow-students who never show up at any event… Anyway, the idea came up spontaneously, he gave it a try and here we are! In his opinion, the aim of the Club is "…to ensure an unreserved existence between us, English students…" While I cannot but agree with him, the fact is that until now we have had this unreserved existence only among 10-15 English students from both the 1st and the 2nd year. As you all know this is not exactly the number of students at the English Department. We all need to get to know each other better in order to come up with a friendlier atmosphere. Farkas wants change. He is going to make it more interesting for all of us by presenting new, more recent, films. By introducing these new movies, we hope that more people will be interested and will join us. It is worth coming, because every film club ends with a so-called "afterparty". That is the time for chatting, drinking tea, making new friends and to talk about the recently seen movie. I am personally convinced that it is a great opportunity we shouldn’t miss. If we do, then we may all lose some good experiences from our lives. So don’t miss the next one! At least give it a try, and then let’s see what we’ll see….
Freshmen on Duty
Finally! The second time to support the English major freshmen couple at the PKE Freshmen’s Ball has come. This, by the way, was an extraordinary event, same as last year, and it progresses every time to perfectness. Our representatives also share this opinion, because, in their words, "…it was a great party!" The lion-hearted knight and the beautiful lady from our department were: Renáta Iako and Marcel Talafa. They had to cope with some exciting tests which, by the way, were funny and tasty. By ‘tasty’ I mean the pie-eating, which at first sight doesn’t seem very difficult, does it? I know it doesn’t but if the poor knight’s hands are tied up and the lady is only supposed to hold the plate and feed him in this way ..I mean, come on, be serious! The aim was achieved … we all had fun afterwards at a great party where everybody could relax. As far as we are concerned, there is nothing to be ashamed (or to be proud) of. They did what they could and this is the result. The last place does not matter that much, what does matter is the positive feeling with what they left the stage.The other major freshmen trial was at the theatre organized by the NMD. It was a wonderful party packed with celebrities like Abaházi Csaba or the well-known Hungarian band Zanzibár. Everybody had a great time at the show and at the afterparties as well. It was an exhausting period both for the freshmen and for all of us because the two events were held within two weeks, one after the other. We don’t have anything to do, except to take a rest after all these excitements. But do not make it too long because the Christmas party is coming …

We asked some freshmen about their first impressions of the English course and we are happy to share them with you.
M.K.: It is surprisingly very hard but also interesting though it does not satisfy my expectations. We are made to learn things which have nothing to do with some of the courses.
Sz.L.: It is much harder than I would have thought of but I like it very much.
Sz.R.: It is harder than I had imagined but better; better learning conditions than elsewhere and it is a fair this way. Expectations are high but I do not regret coming here. People are pushed from behind so that even if one is not interested or is unwilling will learn English.
B.B.: It is hard but if you want to reach something you have to work for it.
K.L.: I have a very good opinion; teachers are severe for our sake. I like it a lot ,I am satisfied. Up to now I haven’t thought that it is such a good faculty but now I am clear about it.
R.K.: I like it though I think it is a bit too hard, on the other hand what is not?
H.E.: In my opinion it is good. I like it. In fact it is very hard to keep up with the classes. You can miss too few classes.
N.E.: High class. Cool, just a bit overcrowded. I just wish they got off our back.
B.É.: Everything is O.K.; one has to learn. I have got what I was looking for. It is hard work but I did not come here top relax.
N. I.: One can survive it. It’s good that I study English as a single major and I hope it will be useful for me, too.

In books, films, TV, the unmistakable impression emerges of a very dull, earnest body, usually female, with glasses (probably those little half glasses), her hair in - yes, here it comes - a bun, wearing sensible shoes, tweed skirt, droopy sweater...do I need to continue? But there are more RADICAL images what modern librarians can create.If you don't like the old images of librarians you can choose the hot, young, stylish one who sits in her chair with crossed legs, with a nail-file in her hand, wearing a short Donna Karan designed dress and when somebody enters the library takes out her sexiest smile ever.  Obviously, librarians come in many shapes and sizes!!! But this is only image. What really matters is the person!To understand that librarians have some extra qualities behind the image like patience and basic instinct to serve and help, consider the following story: A student enters the library and walks up to the librarian with these words: "I got a quote from a book I turned in last week but I forgot to write down the author and title. What I know that it's a big and red book and my friend told me that the cover looked really interesting. Could you help me?"…The librarian (choose your own image) opened her eyes wide and slowly rose from her chair… Instead of telling you the end of the story I'd rather give you a piece of advice: if you recognize yourself in this student and still get the book, please appreciate the librarian who can help you on the basis of such "relevant" information as the colour, the size or maybe the smell of the book that you need for "tomorrow". Oups! Did I talk too much? Perhaps this type is another category of librarians…
